Lazz, a dog found alive in a trashcan under the Lakeshore Drive overpass at St. Bernard Avenue in New Orleans, is now fighting his way back after emergency surgery for spinal damage and a severe maggot infestation. The Humane Society of Louisiana says rescuers discovered him weak, malnourished and in rough enough shape that it was not clear at first if he would make it. Veterinarians now estimate he has about an 85% chance at a full recovery. The nonprofit expects his medical and surgical bills to climb to around $15,000 and has put up a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest. Investigators say a suspect has already been identified and a formal report has been filed with the New Orleans Police Department.
The ordeal came to light thanks to a Good Samaritan who noticed something was very wrong inside that trashcan. The man, identified by the Humane Society as Keith Capone, got Lazz out and took him for care, according to WDSU. The station reports that Lazz was covered in maggots, extremely weak and in need of surgery to address his spinal injuries. The Humane Society says it is fronting the initial medical costs while its cruelty team and outside investigators chase down tips from the public.
Investigation and Possible Charges
According to the Humane Society, investigators have identified a suspect, and the New Orleans Police Department has an official report open on the case. If prosecutors move forward, the accused could face aggravated-cruelty charges, which in many situations are treated as felonies. Under Louisiana law, aggravated cruelty to animals can carry one to ten years in prison and fines of up to $25,000, and courts may also order psychological evaluations or ban offenders from owning animals for years, per the state statute.
How to Help Lazz
The Humane Society of Louisiana has posted a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and is actively raising money to cover Lazz’s mounting veterinary expenses. For tips or to report suspected cruelty, the group’s contact page lists reporting options, while the New Orleans Police Department is handling the formal criminal case. See the Humane Society of Louisiana and coverage from WDSU for more details, including how to earmark donations for Lazz via the Humane Society’s website.
Lazz’s recovery has sparked an outpouring of sympathy across New Orleans and fresh calls from advocates for tougher, more consistent enforcement of animal-protection laws and better support for local rescue groups. Anyone with information about how Lazz ended up in that trashcan is urged to contact the Humane Society or the NOPD so investigators can follow up.
