A man found lying in a bed drenched in blood on Donna Drive in New Orleans East died after hospital staff discovered a gunshot wound to his head — a wound that wasn't apparent when paramedics first arrived. Emergency responders had been sent to the 4900 block of Donna Drive around 3:24 a.m. Monday for what started as a routine medical call, not a report of gunfire.
According to WDSU, EMS crews found the man lying in bed with a towel over his head, drenched in blood, and transported him to a local hospital. Police were not notified of a gunshot wound at the time of discovery, the station reports. It was only after the man arrived at the hospital that personnel found a gunshot wound to his head, and he later died from his injuries. New Orleans police are now conducting an ongoing investigation into his death.
The 4900 block of Donna Drive sits in the Read Boulevard West section of New Orleans East, within the territory patrolled by the New Orleans Police Department's Seventh District. That detail matters here: because EMS initially responded believing this was a medical emergency rather than a shooting, the original scene at the residence may not have been preserved the way a homicide unit would typically secure it, complicating the investigation for detectives now working the case after the fact.
Coroner's Office Faces Legal Clock on Cause of Death
Louisiana law requires parish coroners to investigate and autopsy any death involving gunshot wounds or suspicious circumstances, per Louisiana Revised Statute 13:5713. Once that criminal death investigation wraps, the coroner is required under Article 105 of the state's Code of Criminal Procedure to submit a written report on the cause of death to the district attorney within 10 days, according to FindLaw. It remains unknown whether the Orleans Parish Coroner's Office has yet ruled the Donna Drive death a homicide, suicide, or accident.
It's also unclear whether NOPD has secured a search warrant for the residence, or whether investigators have gathered doorbell camera footage from neighbors along Donna Drive — both open questions in a case where the crime scene wasn't treated as one until the victim was already at the hospital. Donna Drive isn't unfamiliar to Seventh District officers; the block saw a string of auto burglaries in the 4700 block back in February 2018 that drew a police response, per NOPD News.
A Rare Violent Death in a District Trending Safer
The death comes as New Orleans continues a multi-year drop in homicides. The city had recorded 53 homicide victims year-to-date as of mid-August, a 36% decline from the same period in 2025 and a 71% drop from 2022, according to the Metrocrime Weekly Crime Bulletin. Nonfatal shootings citywide are also down 24% year-over-year, with 97 incidents reported by mid-August compared to 127 during the same stretch last year, the bulletin notes.
NOPD's Seventh District, which covers all of New Orleans East, recorded zero major violent crime incidents during the week of August 10–16, even as gun violence flared intermittently in the district earlier in the summer.
