New Orleans Sizzles With 106-Degree Heat Index Before Afternoon Storms Slam City

New Orleans starts Wednesday with clear skies and temperatures around 82 degrees, but the calm morning is headed toward a heat index near 106. The city should reach about 94 degrees before scattered showers and thunderstorms begin developing after 2 p.m.

Afternoon Storms Could Bring Lightning And Gusty Winds

The rain chance is 30% Wednesday afternoon, meaning some neighborhoods could see a quick downpour while others stay dry. The National Weather Service says stronger storms could produce damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and brief periods of heavy rain.

Storm chances continue Wednesday night, when temperatures dip only to around 78 degrees and the rain chance rises to 40%. No watches, warnings or advisories are currently in effect for the New Orleans area, but anyone outdoors should have a way to get inside quickly if thunder rolls in.

Thursday Brings The Week’s Wettest Stretch

Thursday looks considerably stormier, with showers and thunderstorms likely from late morning through the afternoon and an 80% chance of rain. The high should reach near 89 degrees before storms knock temperatures back toward the mid-80s, and rainfall totals of a quarter to half an inch are possible.

Showers and thunderstorms remain likely Friday, with another high near 89 and a 60% rain chance. Saturday should be mostly sunny and warmer near 90 degrees, though an afternoon storm remains possible.

More Rain Chances Return Sunday And Monday

Sunday and Monday currently carry the best rain chances of the extended forecast, at 60% each, with highs around 90 and 91 degrees. Tuesday stays hot near 91 with a lower but still meaningful chance of afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Until storms arrive, the combination of heat and humidity will make outdoor work or exercise feel harder than the thermometer suggests. Drink water, take breaks in shade or air conditioning, and move indoors immediately when thunder is audible.
