A Sunday evening crash on NW 16th Street near Independence Avenue in northwest Oklahoma City ended with several people in the hospital and one driver under arrest on suspicion of DUI, according to police. The two-vehicle collision injured multiple people, including two children, and emergency crews rushed several victims to local hospitals. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing as medical teams continue treating the injured.
Police: Four in One Car Hospitalized, Including Two Children
The Oklahoma City Police Department told KOCO that dispatchers received a 911 call about the wreck around 7:30 p.m. Officers arrived to find two vehicles at the scene, with one car carrying a single occupant and the other holding two adults and two children. Police said those four occupants were transported to local hospitals in serious condition, while the driver of the other vehicle was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
State Officials Keep Impaired Driving in Their Crosshairs
The Oklahoma Highway Safety Office reports that alcohol- and drug-impaired driving still accounts for a substantial share of serious crashes statewide. The office highlights law enforcement, public education efforts and targeted safety campaigns as its main strategies for cutting down on impaired-driving wrecks.
DUI Law Brings Extra Heat When Injuries or Kids Are Involved
Oklahoma’s DUI law, found in Title 47, Section 11-902, lays out enhanced penalties for repeat offenders and for crashes that cause serious injury. It also provides for higher fines when an impaired driver has a child as a passenger. The full statute is available on Justia, and those provisions could influence how prosecutors handle this case as the investigation develops.
Investigators remained at the scene into the evening and said more information will be released as it becomes available. The identities of the injured and the person arrested have not been made public. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the department.
