An ex-seminarian who once taught at a DeSoto County parish has admitted to child-exploitation charges, after investigators said he was uploading and downloading child sexual-abuse material while serving in a north Mississippi church. Jonathan Tu Nguyen-Vuong, formerly a religious educator at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Olive Branch, entered a guilty plea and now faces the very real prospect of spending decades in prison.

What prosecutors say

Prosecutors say the case is about more than a few illegal files on a laptop. According to the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office and reporting by the Daily Memphian, Nguyen-Vuong pleaded guilty to a child-exploitation charge tied to both the uploading and downloading of child sexual-abuse material. The DA’s office told the paper the evidence includes images and videos involving both receipt and distribution, and that the charges carry the possibility of a prison sentence stretching over several decades.

Arrest and investigation

Nguyen-Vuong’s arrest in July 2025 came after investigators served a search warrant at his Nesbit home and at Queen of Peace as part of an Internet Crimes Against Children investigation. Deputies seized multiple electronic devices, and Sheriff Thomas Tuggle said at a news conference that one of those devices was actively downloading child sexual-abuse material when officers walked in. Local reporting noted the bust was part of a wider operation with the unsettling nickname “Operation Exorcism.” The sheriff’s account of the search and seizure was reported by DeSoto County News.

Church response

Before his arrest, Nguyen-Vuong was living and studying with the Priests of the Sacred Heart while serving at Queen of Peace, according to statements released by the religious order and the Diocese of Jackson and compiled by BishopAccountability. The order said it is cooperating fully with law enforcement and included contact information for potential victims or anyone who might have additional information about Nguyen-Vuong’s conduct.

Legal implications

The guilty plea covers a child-exploitation offense centered on child sexual-abuse material, a felony that prosecutors treat as among the most serious in the digital-crimes arena. The DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office told the Daily Memphian that Nguyen-Vuong faces a lengthy prison term under state law. Court records did not list a public sentencing date at the time of reporting, and the case remains open as prosecutors prepare for the next hearing.
