One person was killed and three others were injured Thursday afternoon in a serious crash just north of Columbus, according to county officials. Emergency crews were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. to the intersection of North County Road 325 West and Lowell Road, where first responders arrived to find multiple people trapped in the wreckage and one victim pronounced dead at the scene.
Two passengers were taken from the scene by ground ambulance, while another victim had to be extricated before being flown by Lifeline to an Indianapolis hospital with serious injuries, authorities said.
What happened
As reported by WTHR, the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved a single vehicle. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and three others were hurt. Deputies told reporters that at least one victim had to be cut from the vehicle before being airlifted to Indianapolis with serious injuries.
The sheriff’s crash reconstruction team responded and worked at the intersection for several hours to determine what led to the collision. The roadway was shut down while investigators documented the scene and crews removed the vehicle and debris.
Reconstruction and response
The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office keeps a trained crash reconstruction unit on call to handle serious and complex wrecks. The county’s website outlines the team’s specialized training and equipment, which helps explain why roads often stay closed while investigators take measurements, collect evidence, and document conditions at the scene: Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Office. Officials have not yet released the names of the victims and asked anyone with information about the crash to contact the sheriff’s office.
Intersection safety history
The intersection of CR 325 West and Lowell Road has already caught the attention of transportation planners. It appears in recent state planning documents as a location flagged for potential improvements. The Indiana Department of Transportation listed intersection and bridge work for Lowell Road and CR 325 West in a Local Public Agency filing, a document that could help shape future safety projects once investigators finish their review of the crash: Indiana Department of Transportation.
For now, county crews detoured traffic around the area while emergency responders cleared the wreckage and worked with investigators to reopen the road.
