A 19-year-old is facing a murder charge after a Saturday shooting in Horn Lake that left a 20-year-old man dead, police say. What began as a call to a quiet residential street just west of Memphis has turned into a homicide investigation that has neighbors rattled and authorities working to explain what happened.

Horn Lake police and court records identify the suspect as 19-year-old Elijah Avent, who is charged with one count of murder, according to WREG. Investigators say Avent fled the scene after the shooting but was later found and taken into custody. He was booked into the DeSoto County jail around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, WREG reports.

Arrest and custody

Avent is currently being held at the DeSoto County Adult Detention Facility, according to the DeSoto County Sheriff's Office website. The facility manages local jail bookings while suspects await initial court appearances and processing.

Scene and investigation

Officers were dispatched Saturday to a home in the 5200 block of Chickasaw Cove, where they found 20-year-old Kejuan Williams dead from a single gunshot wound to the head, investigators told WREG. Police say the shooting appears to have been an isolated incident and that Avent and Williams knew each other before the fatal encounter. A possible motive has not been released.

Court records show Avent is scheduled to appear in DeSoto County court on July 16 at 9 a.m., and he is being held without bond.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say they plan to release additional information as it becomes available.
