San Francisco is getting its softball baby back. The city has been tapped to host the 50th Gay Softball World Series in 2027, a golden-anniversary homecoming to the place where the tournament first found its footing in the late 1970s. The weeklong showdown is expected to draw hundreds of teams and thousands of players and visitors to local ballfields, bars, and neighborhood businesses.
League officials say the San Francisco Gay Softball League has been chosen to stage the 50th International Pride Softball Gay Softball World Series in 2027. As San Francisco Bay Times reports, Commissioner Vincent Fuqua called the nod "a tremendous honor," and the league has already kicked off the long game of recruiting sponsors and volunteers.
Back to the beginning
The tournament has deep roots in San Francisco. Local coverage traces the first Gay Softball World Series to the close of the 1977 season, when a best-of-five matchup pitted San Francisco and New York teams against each other. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, that early coast-to-coast showdown helped spark what grew into a World Series that now spans the continent.
What the World Series looks like
International Pride Softball, the group that coordinates the World Series, traces its broader movement to the late 1970s and now includes dozens of member cities and thousands of players. As iPrideSoftball notes, the annual World Series draws hundreds of teams and is part of an organizational network that counts more than 20,000 players across North America.
City prep and fundraising
Pulling off a World Series at this scale does not come cheap. The Bay Times reported that Dawn Dzurilla, the SFGSL partnership director, reminded organizers that such a large event costs money. Lots of money, and said the league is courting sponsors and community volunteers to keep the celebration free and accessible. KTVU's June 1 video segment also showed Commissioner Vincent Fuqua and League Treasurer Michael Cross talking through early planning and outreach efforts to make sure the anniversary return lands solidly in fair territory.
The World Series rotates among host cities each year, and the official site currently lists Columbus, Ohio, as the 2026 host from August 30 through September 5, ahead of San Francisco's 2027 milestone. For longtime players and organizers in the city, the 50th anniversary is shaping up as both a reunion and a chance to spotlight San Francisco's queer sports community for a national crowd.
