A predawn confrontation along the San Antonio River Walk left a man fighting for his life Sunday after he was stabbed in the neck behind a downtown hotel, authorities said.
The stabbing happened around 2:30 a.m. on the river level in the 100 block of Losoya Street, behind a hotel just off the waterway. Police said the suspect took off before officers got there, and investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked the violence.
Officers and emergency crews rushed to the scene and took the man to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition, according to News 4 San Antonio. The station reports that investigators have not released the victim's name or any description of the attacker.
Riverwalk patrol and safety
Despite a heavy law-enforcement presence along the water, serious incidents like this still break through. Per San Antonio Park Police, the Riverwalk Patrol unit is tasked with keeping the tourist corridor in check, deploying officers on foot, bicycles and patrol boats to respond to calls and assist visitors. That unit works alongside the San Antonio Police Department on criminal investigations and crowd control during busy downtown events.
Investigation ongoing
Police said detectives are piecing together what led up to the altercation and the stabbing, and as of Sunday morning no arrests had been announced, according to News 4 San Antonio. Officials have not released a suspect description or the victim's identity, citing the need to notify family members first.
Context and how to help
The River Walk has seen similar late-night violence before. Reporting by the San Antonio Express-News highlighted a 2022 stabbing near the Hyatt and the same 100 block of Losoya, a reminder that the postcard-perfect stretch of river can turn dangerous in the overnight hours.
Anyone with information on Sunday’s stabbing is urged to contact the San Antonio Police Department. The city’s Park Police directory lists the non-emergency line as 210-207-7273 for tips and assistance.
