What started as a late-night hangout in Miami’s Riverside neighborhood turned violent just before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, when police say a 27-year-old man stabbed a 21-year-old guest in the torso with a steak knife inside his home. Miami Fire Rescue rushed the wounded man into emergency surgery, and he was later moved to intensive care. A 28-year-old woman at the scene also suffered an eye injury, and officers say the suspect fought them on the way to jail, damaging the inside of a patrol car.
What police say
According to Local 10, police identified the suspect as Daeshone Vaughn Codner, 27. An arrest report lists several counts against him, including attempted felony murder, tampering with a victim, battery, criminal mischief and resisting an officer without violence.
Officers say they were called to the 300 block of Southwest 15th Avenue in the Riverside neighborhood, where they found a 21-year-old man with a stab wound on the left side of his torso. The report states that Miami Fire Rescue transported the victim to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where he underwent emergency surgery before being placed in intensive care.
Video and witness accounts
Surveillance video referenced in the arrest report allegedly shows Codner walking toward the male victim while holding a black steak knife, with the victim appearing to try to defend himself before being stabbed once, according to Local 10.
Witnesses told detectives the confrontation began on the home’s rear patio after the woman threw a drink. They said Codner then went inside, retrieved the steak knife, and came back outside. The woman told investigators she tried to dial 911, but Codner allegedly grabbed her phone and threw it, preventing the call, according to the arrest report.
Charges and custody
Jail records show Codner is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with bond listed as “to be set.” Prosecutors have not released a possible motive.
Per Miami-Dade County, Turner Guilford Knight is the county’s primary detention center and the usual booking site for Miami arrests, with county guidance outlining the process from booking through arraignment and bond hearings.
It is not yet clear when Codner will appear in court, and officials note the counts listed in the arrest report remain preliminary. Police say the motive is still unknown and the investigation remains open. Authorities have not released additional details.
