Monday evening traffic on westbound I-80/94 took a violent turn when a driver was shot in what police are calling an apparent road-rage incident at the top of the Burr Street exit ramp near Gary. The wounded driver managed to steer his orange Jeep Wrangler off the ramp and into the nearby Hard Rock Casino, where he got help and was taken to a local hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.
Indiana State Police said the shooting happened around 6 p.m. at the traffic light at the top of the Burr Street ramp from westbound Interstate 80/94. Responding troopers later found the victim at the Hard Rock Casino around 5:45 p.m., according to ABC7 Chicago, where he had driven himself after being shot.
Borman Expressway Has Seen Other Shootings
The I-80/94 Borman Expressway near Burr Street has been no stranger to gunfire and serious crashes in recent years. In 2019, two people, including an 11-year-old, were wounded on the same stretch, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. State police also investigated another shooting on the corridor in 2024, according to local reporting by WBIW.
Investigation and traffic
Investigators told ABC7 Chicago they believe the confrontation began on westbound I-80 as vehicles were exiting onto Burr Street, escalating until shots were fired at the top of the ramp. Indiana State Police said only the exit ramp was blocked while troopers worked the scene, and traffic on the interstate continued to move. No one was in custody as of Monday evening, and authorities asked anyone with information to call 219-696-6242.
