SANDY SPRINGS — A traffic stop on Roswell Road Thursday ended in dramatic fashion when officers used a bumper-mounted grappling device to lock down a pickup and arrest a man police say was wanted on multiple felony warrants. Members of the city’s Street Crimes Unit spotted the suspect, moved in without a chase, and took him into custody. Police identified the man as Caden Dean Armiger, who was booked into the Fulton County Jail and is facing several charges, according to jail records.
According to WSB-TV, Street Crimes Unit officers used a Grappler Police Bumper during the stop, a device that hooks onto a vehicle’s rear tire to keep it from driving away and to cut off the chance of a pursuit. WSB reports that Armiger was taken to Fulton County Jail, where records show he faces two counts of property damage, two counts of interference with government property, and three counts of possession of a Schedule I controlled substance. Police have not released further information on the underlying felony warrants and say the investigation is still active.
How the grappler works
The grappler is a net-style, bumper-mounted tool that is engineered to toss a tethered strap or net around the rear tire of a vehicle and bring it to a controlled stop. As outlined by Arizona's Family, state troopers in Phoenix recently relied on the same technology to halt a wrong-way SUV without resorting to a high-speed chase. Officers and traffic experts say the system is meant to dial down the danger that comes with pursuits, although using it is still a judgment call for the officers on scene.
Traffic safety and Sandy Springs enforcement
Roswell Road is one of Sandy Springs’ main arteries, and the city’s Traffic Unit and Special Operations teams regularly patrol the corridor to target crashes and higher-risk traffic stops, according to the Sandy Springs Police Department. Officials told WSB-TV the grappler was used specifically to avoid a pursuit that could have put other drivers at risk. Police departments across the country are increasingly leaning on tools like this as they try to balance public safety with on-the-spot officer decisions.
What’s next
Armiger remains in custody while investigators with Sandy Springs and Fulton County continue to work the case. The main Fulton County booking hub is located at the Rice Street facility in northwest Atlanta, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. Anyone with information about the stop is asked to contact Sandy Springs police through the department’s non-emergency line or its online tip options.
