A San Francisco-bound United Airlines flight turned into an unscheduled Tokyo layover on Wednesday after a passenger reportedly became disruptive midair and clashed with cabin crew. The jet diverted to Narita Airport, Japanese police boarded and removed the traveler, and the flight eventually continued on to SFO several hours late.
Flight diversion and timeline
United flight UA858 departed Shanghai Pudong around midday and was rerouted to Narita after the disturbance on board. The aircraft landed in Tokyo, then later took off again for San Francisco, according to Jiemian.
Passengers describe chaotic scene
Passengers and video posted online described a messy standoff in the cabin. A woman was seen arguing with flight attendants, tossing food and utensils and refusing to follow instructions, according to accounts shared after landing.
Clips circulating on social media showed officers in uniforms marked Chiba police boarding the aircraft. One witness quoted by the New York Post said the passenger at times hit herself during the confrontation, while Chinese coverage of the flight reported similar details, including in HK01.
Police response at Narita
Chinese video coverage and reporting say Chiba Prefectural Police officers boarded the jet after it arrived at Narita and escorted the woman off the plane. Jiemian reported that officers also removed her carry-on bags while crew members repeatedly asked other passengers to stay seated.
Delay and onward journey
After the removal, the aircraft eventually departed Narita and completed its trip to San Francisco, arriving several hours behind schedule. Flight history and passenger accounts place the diversion and onward leg in the afternoon and evening, with some travelers saying the jet landed at SFO about an hour and 40 minutes late, according to Flightradar24.
Why it matters
Midair incidents that force a diversion are more than just travel horror stories. They highlight ongoing concerns in the airline industry about unruly passengers, safety risks and the sizable operational costs of dropping into an unscheduled airport.
The International Air Transport Association’s fact sheet on disruptive behavior details industry data and calls for tougher enforcement and penalties to deter conduct that can threaten crew and fellow passengers, according to IATA.
United Airlines did not immediately respond to requests for comment, according to HK01. Passengers were ultimately allowed to continue to San Francisco, and authorities in Japan or the United States could still take further action as any investigation moves forward.
