San Pablo police released today new photos of the car and people investigators believe are tied to the still-unsolved 2020 killing of Shawn Tillis. Tillis, 27, a father, was shot while sitting in his car outside an apartment complex on the 1300 block of Rumrill Boulevard in San Pablo.

What the police released

The post includes still images of a black 2015 Volkswagen Passat and surveillance frames showing two people walking up to Tillis’s vehicle, according to the San Pablo Police Department's Facebook post. Detectives say the Passat was running on license plates stolen from another vehicle and that investigators later recovered the car, as reported by KTVU. The department is urging anyone who recognizes the people or the vehicle to contact investigators.

Evidence and what investigators say

Detectives say the two suspects fired more than 30 rounds from an assault rifle and a handgun at close range before fleeing in a waiting car, according to CBS San Francisco. Surveillance video released in 2023 pairs the footage with audio from a ShotSpotter unit and shows the attack unfolding near the Rumrill Boulevard apartments. Authorities previously said the suspect car was seen heading toward Oakland after the shooting and that no arrests have been made.

Reward and how to help

On April 24, Gov. Gavin Newsom reissued a $50,000 reward that includes the Tillis investigation, the governor's office said in a press release. "Every family deserves answers and justice. These rewards send a message that every case matters, every victim matters," the release quotes Newsom, and San Pablo police say they hope the incentive will prompt new tips, per the Governor's Office. Anyone with information is asked to call the San Pablo Investigations Division tip line at 510-215-3255 or contact Sergeant Robert Brady at 510-215-3295 or [email protected], according to KTVU.

Investigators say they have exhausted traditional leads in the case and are again turning to the public and the reissued reward to break the case open, per the department's post and local reporting. Anyone with footage or information is asked to call the tip line or email Sgt. Brady, so detectives can follow up.
