Northbound drivers in Schertz are in for a long grind. The I-35 on-ramp just north of Corporate Drive is now closed for an extended stretch, and traffic is being funneled over to the Schertz Parkway entrance while crews tackle drainage work and ramp changes. The shutdown folds into a broader Interstate 35 expansion that officials say is meant to boost safety and cut down travel times along one of the Northeast Side’s busiest corridors.
Which ramp is closed and the detour
The city of Schertz says the northbound on-ramp north of Corporate Drive closed on Wednesday and is expected to stay shut through August 2026, with drivers detoured to the next northbound entrance at Schertz Parkway, according to MySA. While the ramp is out of commission, crews will install drainage and complete other roadwork tied to TxDOT’s I-35 NEX program. Drivers in the area can look for temporary signs and flaggers helping direct traffic during the heaviest commute times.
Where this fits in the I-35 NEX program
The closure is one small piece of TxDOT’s multi-phase I-35 Northeast Expansion (NEX), a roughly 20-mile effort to add elevated lanes, rework ramps and upgrade drainage between North Walters Street in San Antonio and FM 1103 in Guadalupe County, according to TxDOT. The agency notes that construction on the Central project kicked off in June 2022, with South Phase 1 starting in summer 2024, and the Central segment slated to wrap up in late 2027. TxDOT pitches the upgrades as long-term fixes aimed at handling continued population and freight growth across Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe counties.
Expect more interruptions this summer
Nightly and weekend closures have become routine as crews set bridge beams and pour decks, and local coverage has repeatedly warned drivers to brace for regular slowdowns, per KSAT. That outlet and others have tracked a steady stream of similar short-term closures across the Northeast Side as work moves through the Central and South segments. Residents and delivery companies say the rolling disruptions are already reshaping commute patterns and common routing choices.
How to plan your commute
For now, drivers should pad their travel time, consider alternate routes and use the Schertz Parkway ramp to get back on northbound I-35 while the Corporate Drive on-ramp stays closed. TxDOT publishes weekly closure schedules and maintains a live closure map, and it recommends signing up for project updates or following the San Antonio district’s social media feeds for real-time alerts, per TxDOT. Businesses, school districts and freight operators along the corridor are expected to share routing changes as closures shift over the summer.
