A weekend dive off Jupiter’s inlet ended in tragedy when a woman suffered an emergency in the water and later died at the hospital, according to authorities. Crews rushed the unresponsive diver to the docks at Square Grouper’s Jupiter Inlet location on Saturday, then on to Jupiter Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the death.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded on June 6 to reports of an unresponsive diver at Square Grouper Marina, and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue units arrived at about 10:15 a.m. Investigators said the woman experienced an unknown issue while diving that caused her to panic. She was taken to Jupiter Medical Center and pronounced dead at 11:07 a.m. Detectives said no foul play is suspected and the case remains open, according to CBS12.
Where It Happened
The emergency call brought first responders to the docks at Square Grouper’s Jupiter Inlet spot, a well-known launch point for dive charters and local boaters. Square Grouper lists the marina at 1111 Love St. in Jupiter, within quick reach of the inlet. From there, the injured diver was transported to nearby Jupiter Medical Center for treatment. How Diving Emergencies Unfold
Medical events, panic and equipment problems are among the most common triggers in recreational diving fatalities, and cardiac issues account for a sizable share of those cases, Divers Alert Network reports. While diving deaths are relatively rare, DAN’s monitoring shows many occur when an acute medical problem or human factor incapacitates a diver and rescue efforts are delayed. Experts say practices like diving with a buddy, staying within training limits and carrying surface signaling gear can improve the chances of a safe rescue when something goes wrong.
What’s Next
Detectives told CBS12 that the case will remain open while the medical examiner completes an autopsy and that there is still no indication of foul play. Authorities have not released the diver’s name, citing pending family notification. This story will be updated if officials release additional details.
