Shabu Shack is packing up its burners in South San Francisco, with the Northern California hot pot chain announcing on social media that the restaurant will close next Monday, June 22. Once the doors lock that night, the company will be left without a single Bay Area outpost.
The chain, which bills itself as NorCal’s #1 hot pot, lists locations across Northern California in cities such as Elk Grove, Sacramento and Davis on the Shabu Shack website. The South San Francisco shop has been the brand’s only Bay Area presence and appears alongside its other Northern California locations on the official site.
Local station KRON4 reported the closure, noting that Shabu Shack posted next Monday's end date to social media. The station also said it reached out to the company for comment but did not receive a response in time for its story. According to KRON4, the South San Francisco restaurant opened in fall 2023, and the company continues to operate additional locations outside the Bay Area.
What Shabu Shack's Exit Means For Bay Area Diners
Hot pot fans are not completely out of luck. The former Shabu Shack location in San Jose now operates as Shabu Time, according to that restaurant’s website. Still, the South San Francisco closure is one more example in a wave of restaurant turnover as Bay Area spots contend with high rents, staffing challenges and supply pressures, a trend documented by the San Francisco Chronicle.
Shabu Shack’s social media post lists next Monday as the final day of service in South San Francisco, and the company has not issued a formal statement beyond that notice as of publication. This story will be updated if Shabu Shack releases additional details or responds to local inquiries.
