Pine Hall, a new rooftop cocktail bar from Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group, opens Thursday on the 12th floor of Hudson's Detroit, bringing a laid-back neighborhood tavern vibe to one of downtown’s flashiest new addresses. The space is built for crowds, with capacity for roughly 300 guests and a large outdoor deck that stares straight out at the Detroit skyline. The concept tips its hat to the old Pine Room while serving classic tavern fare, Michigan-made spirits, and cocktails geared to both game-day regulars and post-work office escapees.
The Pine Hall site lists the bar on the 12th floor of the Hudson’s project, and Detroit Metro Times notes that the room seats about 300 and serves as Union Square Hospitality Group’s Detroit debut. The rooftop fits into Bedrock’s broader Hudson's Detroit redevelopment, which mixes event venues with retail and a planned Detroit EDITION hotel, according to Hudson's Detroit. Designers and local outlets say the goal is for Pine Hall to feel like a true locals’ bar that also pulls in out-of-towners looking for a view.
Menu and hours
According to The Detroit News, Pine Hall’s opening menu leans into tavern staples with some Detroit nostalgia baked in. Starters and bar snacks run about $9 to $19, with a Maurice salad priced at $24 and boneless fried chicken at $22. Mains range roughly $22 to $36, including a bavette steak served with a duck-fat baked potato. On the drinks side, the bar pours an Icebox Martini and a Cherry Picked cocktail built on Journeyman rye and finished with a crushed potato chip rim. Hours are listed as 4 p.m. to midnight Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 4 to 10 p.m. Sunday. Reservations are available through OpenTable or by calling (313) 545-8770.
A nod to the Pine Room and big views
The Detroit News reports that the design intentionally riffs on the wood-paneled Pine Room that once operated inside J. L. Hudson’s, with warm finishes inside and a roughly 3,000-square-foot rooftop deck looking out over Ford Field and Comerica Park. "We've been working on this for a long time. For me, it's just so cool to see it all come together," Meyer said, as quoted by the paper. The mix of classic interiors and an open-air deck is meant to keep Pine Hall in play year-round for cocktails and small plates, not just on perfect summer nights.
What it means for downtown
Pine Hall brings a nationally known hospitality group into a downtown Detroit scene that keeps adding new bars and restaurants, and it plugs directly into Bedrock’s push to reanimate the historic Hudson’s block, according to Hudson's Detroit. Local media first spotlighted the project earlier this year when the concept was announced and suggested that Union Square Hospitality Group’s Detroit debut could lure more national attention to the city’s dining landscape, as noted in Hoodline.
Reservations are live on OpenTable and by phone at (313) 545-8770. For details on private events and ongoing updates, check Pine Hall. With tavern comfort food, a Detroit-minded cocktail list, and a skyline-facing deck, Pine Hall is aiming to be both a regulars’ haunt and a summertime magnet for visitors downtown.
