According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, police issued mandatory evacuations for portions of East Ocean Air Drive and the 10500 blocks of Sand Crab Place and Corte Jardin Del Mar. Evacuation warnings were also put in place for the 5000 block of Sea Mist Lane and nearby streets, including Abalone Landing Terrace and Sea Pearl Cove. Officers urged residents to leave immediately and to follow directions from emergency personnel as crews worked to secure the area.

NBC 7 San Diego reported that Sorrento Valley Boulevard was closed between Vista Sorrento Parkway and Camino Santa Fe while firefighters and law enforcement staged equipment and blocked access to canyon approaches. A temporary evacuation site was opened at Mandell Weiss Eastgate Park, 4275 East Gate Mall, where residents from threatened neighborhoods were directed after the area was cleared.
Explosion reported before flames
The San Diego Union-Tribune also noted that at least one person reported hearing an explosion shortly before flames were seen on the hillside, a detail relayed by officers at the scene. Investigators and utility crews entered the area to examine power lines and other potential ignition sources while the cause of the fire remained under investigation.

NBC 7 San Diego reported that roughly 145 firefighting personnel from multiple agencies were assigned to the incident.
