One person was killed last night in a two-vehicle crash on Indianapolis’ south side, according to police. The collision occurred in the 3300 block of South East Street, just south of Madison Avenue, and kept the roadway blocked for hours while investigators examined the scene. Emergency crews shut down lanes as detectives documented the wreckage and cleared debris.
According to WISH-TV, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Southeast District officers were called to the area shortly before 8:50 p.m. Monday. Video posted on social media showed a motorcycle and a sport-utility vehicle among the damaged vehicles, and IMPD confirmed that one person died at the scene. The department’s fatal-crash team responded and is investigating how the collision unfolded, WISH-TV reported.
Summer Riding Season and Local Crash Patterns
State crash data show that motorcycle collisions occur more frequently in the summer months and that deadly motorcycle crashes are more likely during evening and low-light conditions, patterns closely watched by safety planners. Per the Indiana Crash Facts 2024, seasonal and visibility factors increase risk for riders from June through August. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Planning Organization tracks serious wrecks through its crash dashboards and maps high-injury corridors that the city targets for safety upgrades and street improvements.
What Investigators Are Asking
IMPD is asking anyone who saw the crash or has relevant video to contact the department as detectives continue to reconstruct what happened. According to WISH-TV, officers canvassed the area for witnesses and reviewed available footage. Officials have not yet released the victim’s name or determined an official cause of the collision.
