What started as a South Loop fire call Wednesday evening turned into a deadly mystery after first responders pulled a man from a burning building and discovered he had been shot and cut.
Firefighters and police were called about 5:11 p.m. to the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue, where they found the man inside the smoke-filled building, according to police. He was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
What police said
Officers entering the building found the victim with a gunshot wound to the head and a cut to his neck, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. A weapon was recovered at the scene, and no one was in custody as detectives opened a death investigation, the outlet reported.
South Loop safety concerns
The case adds another unsettling incident to a busy South Loop corridor that has already seen its share of recent violence. In May, a 24-year-old man was stabbed near Grant Park after a confrontation by the skate park, an attack previously covered in Hoodline’s man stabbed near Grant Park report.
Investigators on scene
Chicago police told the Chicago Sun-Times that detectives are treating the case as a death investigation. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday night, and authorities have not released the victim's name or any suspected motive.
Hoodline will update this story if authorities release additional information. Anyone with tips for detectives is asked to contact the Chicago Police Department.
