Gunfire inside the lobby of a Motel 6 on Elsie Avenue in south Sacramento left a 21-year-old man dead on Tuesday, and the suspect is still on the loose, authorities said. Deputies called to the motel found the victim and launched a search that stretched into the afternoon. Detectives worked the scene while officials held back the victim’s name.
What deputies say
According to KCRA, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s communications center got a 911 call reporting a shooting inside the motel lobby. When deputies arrived, they found a 21-year-old man with fatal injuries. The suspect had already taken off before law enforcement got there, investigators said.
Where it happened
The shooting took place at the Motel 6 on Elsie Avenue, a property that had been eyed for conversion into supportive housing in December 2025. That earlier planning discussion put the site in local headlines, though the Sheriff’s Office did not connect Tuesday’s violence to those prior proposals.
Investigation details
Sgt. Ed Igoe of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office said investigators are pulling surveillance video from the motel and have not released any suspect description. "There is no active threat and people should be cautious," Igoe told KCRA.
How to help
Deputies urged anyone with information or video to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. Non-emergency tips can be called in at 916-874-5115 or submitted through the department’s tip portal. For emergencies, call 911. Detectives said the homicide investigation is ongoing and that more details will be released as they become available.
