A 26-year-old man was hit in the head with a baseball bat and then grazed by gunfire Monday night in a burst of violence on Chicago’s Far South Side, police said.
The attack unfolded about 8:20 p.m. on June 8 in the 6800 block of South Merrill Avenue in South Shore. Police said two people walked up to a vehicle, with one person striking the man in the head with a bat while the other opened fire.
According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the man got out of the vehicle after being hit and was grazed in the back when the second person fired at him. He declined medical attention at the scene and appeared to be in good condition, police said.
Officers said they are looking for two people in connection with the attack, and Area 2 detectives are investigating.
Police Looking For Witnesses
Chicago police are asking anyone who saw what happened or who has video or photos from around the time of the shooting to contact investigators. Even brief, time-stamped clips from home security or dashcams can help detectives track movements and identify who was involved.
What Neighbors Should Know
Incidents like this, involving both a blunt-force assault and gunfire, naturally rattle neighbors even when the victim walks away and declines treatment. Detectives will work to determine a motive and whether the attack is connected to any other recent incidents in the area, while patrol officers and community outreach teams focus on keeping residents informed and visible in the neighborhood.
Details remained limited. As the Chicago Sun-Times reported, Area 2 detectives were handling the case and no arrests had been announced at the time of publication.
