Massachusetts Avenue in Springfield turned into a crime scene Friday evening when gunfire struck a Massachusetts State Police cruiser and troopers fired back, leaving one person hospitalized and another in custody, authorities said. The shooting unfolded around 7 p.m., as members of the State Police gang unit were conducting an investigation outside 159 Massachusetts Avenue. No law enforcement officers were reported injured.
What Officials Say
The Hampden District Attorney’s Office said in a statement that shots were fired toward the troopers’ location and that troopers returned fire after a State Police cruiser was hit, according to the Boston Globe. The office said the case remains under active investigation, and both State Police and Springfield Police have referred all questions to prosecutors. Officials have not released the names of those involved or detailed any potential charges.
Victim And Custody
One person was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and another was taken into custody, Boston 25 News reported. Early accounts did not identify either individual or clarify whether the person detained is suspected of firing at troopers. Investigators urged the public to be patient while they gather evidence and speak with witnesses.
Investigation Underway
The injured person was transported to Baystate Medical Center, and investigators are looking for another individual they believe was involved, according to the Boston Globe. The State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Hampden District Attorney’s Office is leading the probe and will release additional details when they can. Authorities described the scene as a residential stretch of Massachusetts Avenue near Springfield College, which was quickly swarmed by police vehicles and investigators Friday night.
What’s Next
So far, no charges have been announced, and it is still unclear whether the person taken into custody will face criminal counts, Boston 25 News reported. The Hampden District Attorney’s Office will review the troopers’ use of force alongside the physical and forensic evidence from the scene. Officials say more updates will come as the investigation moves forward.
