What should have been an ordinary fast-food shift turned into a shooting scene at a West Palm Beach Taco Bell in 2022. Today, June 22, the man convicted of pulling the trigger, Chevarus Stewart, is set to learn his fate. Prosecutors say Stewart stepped behind the counter in February 2022 and opened fire, wounding two employees and putting others in harm's way.
Conviction and sentencing
According to a press release from the Office of the State Attorney, 15th Judicial Circuit, Stewart was convicted on May 28 of attempted first-degree murder with a firearm (premeditated), four counts of attempted second-degree murder and armed burglary. He also pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Prosecutors say that on February 21, 2022, shortly before 6 p.m., Stewart entered the restaurant, moved behind the counter and opened fire at an employee who was in a relationship with his then-girlfriend.
How the attack unfolded
Prosecutors say Stewart's gunfire struck two employees from behind while other staff and customers were present. WPTV reported at the time that one employee recognized the shooter as the ex-boyfriend of a manager and that the wounded workers were taken to St. Mary's Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Courtroom and prosecutors
Assistant State Attorneys David Gorlicki and Samir Margetic prosecuted the case, according to the state attorney's office, and jurors returned guilty verdicts on May 28. With sentencing set for today, a Palm Beach County circuit judge will decide Stewart's prison term after hearing from prosecutors and the defense.
Local context
The Taco Bell at 45th Street near Military Trail - listed in police reports as around 4385 45th St - was also the scene of an unrelated April 2026 incident in which shots were fired after an argument, according to local coverage. WPBF covered that April episode, which renewed concerns among neighbors and workers about violent flare-ups at fast-food counters in the area.
What to expect
Today's sentencing is scheduled in Palm Beach County Circuit Court. Once the judge issues a ruling, the court record will show the prison term and any restitution or other orders. The hearing could include statements from victims, family members and attorneys before the judge hands down the sentence.
This story will be updated after the hearing with the final sentence and any statements from prosecutors or defense counsel.
