A 17-year-old boy was taken into custody late Sunday after an 18-year-old man was shot and later died in Chicago's South Austin neighborhood, authorities said. The gunfire erupted around 10:15 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Quincy Street, where the victim was found and rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead. Police said a gun was recovered at the scene and that charges against the teen were still pending early Sunday morning.
What police say
Paramedics were already treating the victim for a gunshot wound to the armpit when responding officers arrived, according to CBS Chicago. A witness told police the shooter was still on the scene, officers recovered a handgun and took a 17-year-old into custody. Investigators have described the incident as "domestic in nature," and at last check, formal charges had not yet been announced.
Quincy Street's recent history
The stretch of West Quincy around the 4800 and 5000 blocks has seen more than its share of crime tape in recent years. In May 2025, a fatal shooting on the block led to an arrest this year, a case detailed in Hoodline's coverage of a prior West Quincy killing. The Chicago Sun-Times has also archived reports of other shootings on the 4800 block stretching back several years.
Citywide context
The killing landed during a violent holiday weekend across Chicago, when a mass shooting left multiple people wounded, AP News reported. Those incidents came as hospitals and police have been bracing for, and battling through, a seasonal spike in summer gun violence.
What’s next
Detectives said the investigation remains active and that charges against the 17-year-old were still pending as of early Sunday, CBS Chicago reported. Police have not yet released the victim's name, and officials said more information will be made public as the case moves through the investigative and prosecutorial process.
