A quiet early-morning moment on a West Englewood block turned deadly Saturday when a drive-by shooting left two men dead and a woman fighting for her life, Chicago police said.
The gunfire broke out just after 12:45 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Hermitage Avenue. According to ABC7 Chicago, a 30-year-old man, a 31-year-old man, and a 26-year-old woman were standing outside a home when a white SUV pulled up, and someone inside opened fire.
The 30-year-old man was shot in the head, and the 31-year-old man was shot in the chest, police said. Both were rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead. The woman was also taken to the same hospital in critical condition.
The SUV sped away north on Hermitage Avenue, and Area One detectives are now handling the investigation, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Neighborhood Context
The shooting lands in a neighborhood already on edge from recent tragedies. In late May, a fire on the 6200 block of South Paulina Street killed four people and was later ruled a homicide case by the Cook County medical examiner, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
Cook County Crime Stoppers subsequently offered a $10,000 reward and released surveillance images tied to that suspected arson, according to CBS Chicago.
Investigation Underway
Detectives are working leads and reviewing any available video as they try to piece together who opened fire and why. No arrests had been announced as of Saturday morning, and investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward, per ABC7 Chicago.
Tipsters can share information anonymously with Cook County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-535-STOP (7867) or online, local outlets note. This story will be updated as police release more details.
