A 5-year-old child was shot last night on Detroit's west side near the Fargo-Oakfield Playground, according to police. Officers and detectives spent the night canvassing the park and nearby blocks, looking for evidence and witnesses as they tried to piece together what unfolded. Police said the child was in stable condition and that they expected to release more information later Tuesday night.
As reported by WXYZ, the gunfire broke out in the area of Fargo Avenue and Lindsay Street. It was not immediately clear whether the child was hit inside the park itself. A 7 News Detroit crew was at the scene while officers processed the playground and surrounding streets.
A string of recent West Side park shootings
The shooting adds to a troubling run of violence on Detroit's west side this month. A June 25 episode that wounded a 4-year-old and left a man dead, and a separate June 24 attack that ClickOnDetroit reported critically injured a child, have already put parks and nearby blocks on edge. Together, they sketch a grim pattern of gunfire creeping into neighborhood gathering spots.
Police asking for tips
Detroit police are asking anyone with information about Tuesday night's shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP (1-800-773-2587) or the Detroit Police Homicide Unit at 313-596-2260 for non-emergencies. The City of Detroit outlines tip options and reward eligibility on its site for Detroit Rewards TV.
