North Memphis is set to get a major AI upgrade as Anthropic pledges $1 million to local nonprofit CodeCrew to help build a new headquarters at Northside Square focused squarely on artificial intelligence education and training. The expanded hub will feature a classroom that can hold up to 100 students, a dedicated AI lab with an LED screen, and a flexible community training space as CodeCrew triples its physical footprint. Construction is slated to wrap by December 2026, with the nonprofit aiming to move in by January 2027. The gift also comes with access to Anthropic engineers and technology credits meant to power CodeCrew’s curriculum and workforce programs.
Details of the gift and the new space
According to FOX13 Memphis, Anthropic’s $1,000,000 award will bankroll the buildout of a large classroom, an AI lab, and additional programming space for both students and adults. The main classroom is designed to be split into four smaller rooms that can each host about 25 students, giving CodeCrew flexibility as programs grow. The nonprofit says the new headquarters will be roughly three times the size of its current space, a jump that reflects just how much demand there is for tech and AI training in the city.

For CodeCrew, the new Northside Square space is more than a real estate upgrade. It is a signal that AI training is moving from buzzword to bricks and mortar.
"This space enables us to step into preparing young people for 21st-century careers and 21st-century entrepreneurship and opportunity," CodeCrew founder Meka Egwuekwe said in an interview, according to FOX13 Memphis. He told the station that CodeCrew’s six-month adult training program is designed to place graduates into AI and software roles that start at around $70,000 a year. Leaders say the additional room will let the nonprofit expand both its K–12 programs and its workforce training classes for adults.
CodeCrew's track record
CodeCrew launched in 2015 and has since grown into a major local tech education player, according to reporting by the Institute for Public Service Reporting. The organization’s own site notes that it has served more than 16,000 students and adults and currently runs K–12 programs alongside an adult Code School aimed at preparing job-ready developers, per CodeCrew. Leaders have said the nonprofit outgrew its University of Memphis research-park home and launched a capital campaign to move into Northside Square, with the new headquarters forming a key piece of that larger plan.
