A normally quiet stretch of Aster Drive in Antioch turned into a tense scene yesterday when a man barricaded himself inside an apartment, triggering a large police response, evacuations, and hours of negotiations before he finally surrendered.
The standoff unfolded in the 1600 block of Aster Drive and drew Antioch Police Department crisis negotiators, a tactical team and paramedics. After several hours, the man surrendered and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Neighbors described a heavy emergency presence as officers secured the scene and checked on residents.
What Officers Say Happened Inside
According to a Facebook update from the Antioch Police Department, dispatchers received a 911 call about a disturbance and a possibly injured, bleeding man inside an apartment on Aster Drive. Officers evacuated nearby units as a precaution while crisis negotiators and APD SWAT spent the afternoon trying to talk the man out.
Police say the man eventually walked out of the apartment and surrendered at about 4:09 PM. Paramedics then evaluated him at the scene and transported him to an area hospital.
Suspect ID, Warrant and Alleged Threats
In its post, the Antioch Police Department identified the man as 46-year-old Antioch resident Kevin Henry and said he had an outstanding felony warrant related to a violation of post-release community supervision.
APD says Henry barricaded himself inside the unit, was seen carrying a gasoline container and threatened to harm officers and to set the apartment on fire. The department also publicly thanked Brentwood and Pittsburg police, the Contra Costa Sheriff’s air support unit, the county A3 team, the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and American Medical Response for assisting at the scene.
Mobile Crisis Team Called In
Police say the county’s A3 mobile crisis response team responded to support law enforcement and medical crews during the incident. Contra Costa Health describes A3 as a 24/7 mobile crisis program that pairs behavioral-health clinicians with first responders on high-risk calls. The agency lists the A3 Miles Hall Crisis Call Center at 844-844-5544 and also directs residents to call 211 or the national 988 lifeline for crisis support.
What Happens Next
According to police, any additional charges will be reviewed in consultation with the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office. Once Henry is medically cleared, APD says he will be booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on his outstanding warrant. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office describes that facility as the county’s primary intake jail.
