A 36-year-old Atlanta man was found shot and killed early on July 4 in Vidalia’s East Jenkins neighborhood, according to city and state officials. What should have been the kickoff to a long holiday weekend instead began with crime-scene tape and unanswered questions.
Vidalia police officers were called to reports of gunfire around 3:13 a.m. and found a man lying in the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds, 95.5 WSB reported. The victim, later identified as Rashad Lumpkin, was taken by EMS to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Agents are still working the case as they collect evidence and track down leads.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the lead and is asking anyone with information to contact the GBI regional office in Eastman at 478-374-6988 or the Vidalia Police Department at 912-537-4123, according to The Georgia Virtue. Anonymous tips can also be submitted through the statewide hotline at 1-800-597-TIPS or by using the GBI’s online tip form.
Area Has Seen Previous Shootings
The 500 block of East Jenkins Street is no stranger to gun violence. WTOC previously reported deadly shootings in the same stretch that at times brought in state investigators and sparked worries about possible gang-related activity. With that history in mind, residents are again urging anyone who may have video or information to step up.
What Comes Next
So far, authorities have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains active. When the GBI wraps its work, agents will send the case file to the Middle Judicial Circuit district attorney’s office for review, according to officials. In the meantime, Vidalia police are asking community members to share any tips or footage that could help them piece together what happened in those early-morning hours.
