A nearly 50-year grocery fixture in Nottingham is heading for the checkout lane, with Giant Food set to close its Putty Hill Plaza supermarket next Thursday evening.
The store will stop operating at 6 p.m., according to The Baltimore Banner, which reported that an in-store sign announced the closure. Giant says nearby supermarkets and online services can continue serving the community, but shoppers who rely on this particular store and pharmacy will still need to adjust their routines.
What Nottingham Shoppers Need To Know
Employees at the location are being offered the opportunity to transfer to other Giant stores. Customers with prescriptions at the pharmacy can move them to a preferred Giant pharmacy, while transfers may also be directed to another location based on the customer’s address, The Baltimore Banner reported.
The store’s sign points customers toward other Giant supermarkets, including locations in Baltimore and Parkville. Giant’s official locator lists nearby options such as the stores on Joppa Road, Honeygo Boulevard and Philadelphia Road, along with another Nottingham location on Belair Road.
The Closure Comes During A Broader Grocery Shakeup
The Nottingham shutdown follows other grocery-store changes in Baltimore County, where community leaders have raised concerns about vacant supermarket spaces. WMAR-2 News recently reported that residents and local officials in northwest Baltimore County were seeking a replacement grocer after Giant stores closed in Owings Mills.
This closure does not necessarily leave the Nottingham area without grocery access, given the nearby Giant locations and online ordering options. Still, losing a supermarket that has served local shoppers for decades will be noticeable well beyond the final sweep of the checkout lanes.
