How police say it unfolded
According to the Palo Alto Police Department, security camera footage captured a man approaching the property at about 1:15 AM and returning roughly 45 minutes later to ring the doorbell, as reported by NBC Bay Area. When the homeowner stepped outside to investigate, they found that a vehicle in the driveway had been rummaged through. While attention was focused outside, police say the suspect slipped into the house through an open front door. A female resident inside called 911, officers arrived within minutes, forced open the locked bathroom door and pulled the man out of the home.
Arrest and charges
Police identified the suspect as 46-year-old Oscar Dario Banegas of San Jose. He was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of felony residential burglary and a parole violation, along with misdemeanor counts of methamphetamine possession, resisting arrest and providing false information, according to The Mercury News. Authorities said nothing was reported stolen and neither the residents nor Banegas were injured.
