Sage Robert Tarango, a Beaverton man convicted of domestic violence crimes including rape and strangulation, has been sentenced to 12½ years in prison. A Washington County jury found him guilty on multiple counts, and a judge ordered him to serve 150 months behind bars after what authorities describe as a brutal attack inside a woman's apartment, according to KPTV.
Court ruling and how police say the attack unfolded
In a media release, the Washington County District Attorney's Office said Washington County Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Proctor imposed the 150 month sentence on July 1, after a jury convicted Tarango of rape, strangulation, unlawful use of a weapon and assault. Deputy District Attorneys Katherine Miller and Mark Richman prosecuted the case. According to the release, Tarango will be transferred to the Oregon Department of Corrections to begin serving his sentence.
Beaverton police were called to an apartment on Jan. 4, 2024, for a report of domestic violence and found that Tarango had entered the victim's home and forced her into a back room, KPTV reported. Officers arrested him at the scene, and investigators say the victim later told them Tarango had been violent in earlier incidents. Prosecutors said jurors heard evidence about the assault during the trial.
In its release, the Washington County District Attorney's Office said it "commended the bravery of the victim throughout the legal process." Prosecutors added that the sentence reflects the county's focus on holding domestic violence offenders accountable, and they thanked the Beaverton Police Department and other law enforcement partners for their work on the investigation and trial.
No further court dates were listed in public announcements, and officials did not say when Tarango will be transferred to the Department of Corrections. For emergency help or to report violence, authorities urge people to contact local law enforcement or victim services.
