Crash Scene and Investigation
The collision happened at about 9:30 a.m., and a Brightline train remained stopped just feet from the victim as detectives documented the area, according to Local 10. Reporters on scene described investigators photographing and collecting evidence along the railroad right-of-way and the shoulder of State Road 84 while traffic was detoured around the closure.
Police Response and Traffic Impacts
Fort Lauderdale police warned drivers that all westbound lanes of SR 84 were shut and urged motorists to use Davie Boulevard as an alternate route while detectives worked the scene. Brightline crews kept the train in place as officers and forensic teams marked and documented evidence on and near the tracks.
Nearby, Another Deadly Strike
The fatal crash was the second deadly train-related incident in the area in roughly 12 hours. Local 10 reported that around 9:20 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to the tracks near Southwest Second Avenue and Second Street, where a woman was also struck and killed. Investigators said they are working to understand how two people, in separate incidents, were unable to safely cross the same stretch of rail.
Brightline's Safety Record in Context
Brightline has been under heightened scrutiny over pedestrian and cyclist fatalities along its South Florida corridor, with the Miami Herald reporting a high toll and noting that safety upgrades have often rolled out slowly and in piecemeal fashion. Local officials and safety advocates have called for more fencing, better signage and improved detection systems at crossings to head off more tragedies along the route.
Investigators and Next Steps
Detectives stayed on scene into the afternoon and have not released the identity of the person killed or additional details about what led up to the collision, according to the department's social media post. Police are asking anyone with information to contact Fort Lauderdale detectives as they work to piece together why two deadly strikes occurred on this corridor in less than a day.
