Sip & Savor’s Edgewater cafe on Bryn Mawr has quietly shut down, a move the chain’s owner called “bittersweet.” The closure wipes out the company’s only North Side location and follows two other recent shutdowns that have tightened the brand’s footprint. Over the weekend, neighbors noticed the lights off and the signage stripped from the storefront.

Owner announcement and what he posted

According to Block Club Chicago, owner Trez Pugh III announced on social media that the Edgewater shop at 1070 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., inside the Belle Shore Apartments, is closing, and thanked customers for "every conversation and every memory." Block Club reported that Pugh’s post also hinted he is eyeing a different neighborhood for a future Sip & Savor location.

Company site lists temporary closure

As of this morning, Sip & Savor lists the Edgewater store as "Temporarily Closed" and still shows active cafes at 528 E. 43rd St. in Bronzeville and 5301 S. Hyde Park Blvd. in Hyde Park. The locations page indicates the brand is still operating on the South Side even as the Bryn Mawr address goes offline.

Other recent closures

The Edgewater shutdown is the chain’s third closure since December. Eater Chicago reported that another Bronzeville location closed in December and that the South Loop shop at 31 E. Roosevelt Rd. shuttered earlier this year. City food-inspection "out of business" records also list a Sip & Savor entry for the South Loop address, indicating inspectors found that location closed.

A short run on Bryn Mawr

The Edgewater cafe opened in October 2023 in a former Starbucks space and was touted at the time as a fresh addition to Bryn Mawr’s retail corridor. The 48th Ward office highlighted the grand opening and framed the shop as part of ongoing efforts to bring new businesses to the block.

Pugh’s social media message indicated he is exploring new neighborhoods for the concept, Block Club Chicago reported, although the company has yet to post any formal reopening plans on its site. For now, regulars who depended on the Edgewater coffeehouse will have to head to Sip & Savor’s remaining South Side locations or wait to see where the brand pops up next.
