A Saturday night shooting in Northeast Portland left a 21-year-old man with a gunshot wound and set off a fast-moving police chase that ended with three people in custody and a firearm recovered, authorities say. Police report the victim is expected to survive.
According to investigators, officers pursued a vehicle they believe was involved after it fled the scene. With the help of air support, East Precinct officers used a PIT maneuver to force the SUV to a stop, and at least one of the occupants now faces serious charges.
Witnesses told police a man climbed out of an SUV near Northeast 148th Avenue and East Burnside Street and fired multiple rounds at a person on foot before the vehicle sped off. A short time later, officers with the Gresham Police Department spotted the suspect SUV near Northeast 172nd Avenue and Northeast Couch Street. Portland Police’s airplane picked up the chase from above as the vehicle continued moving.
East Precinct officers then pulled off the PIT maneuver to bring the SUV to a halt. All three occupants bolted from the vehicle but were detained shortly afterward, and officers recovered a firearm at the scene, according to KATU.
