A fast-moving wildfire that sparked Thursday night in American Fork Canyon cut short a summer evening for campers and paddlers alike, forcing evacuations at two popular campgrounds and closing Tibble Fork Reservoir so firefighting aircraft could move in. The blaze was initially pegged at just a few acres, but crews wasted no time clearing people out and locking down the scene to keep visitors and pilots safe.
Small Blaze Triggers Big Response in the Canyon
Timpooneke Campground and Mutual Dell were evacuated, and Tibble Fork Reservoir was shut to support air operations, according to KSL NewsRadio. U.S. Forest Service staff also closed Timpooneke Road at its junction with Alpine Loop Road while crews worked the fire and asked visitors to steer clear of the area.
Utah County Commissioner Skyler Beltran urged people on social media to stay away and not fly drones, KSL NewsRadio reported, noting that unmanned aircraft can interfere with firefighting planes and helicopters. Officials said that moving campers out quickly and shutting down the reservoir helped reduce risks to both people on the ground and the air crews attacking the flames.
Forest Service: Keep Moving, Don’t Crowd Canyon Roads
The Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest warned motorists not to pull over along American Fork Canyon or the Alpine Loop while aircraft are flying overhead and urged visitors to follow posted closures, according to the forest’s alert page. Forest officials estimated the burn area at roughly five acres and said crews were doing mop-up and patrols to make sure the fire stays out.
One More Blaze in an Already Busy Utah Fire Season
Although the American Fork fire remained relatively small, it arrived in the middle of an already active Utah fire season that has resources stretched thin. Updates from the National Interagency Fire Center and local reporting show multiple large incidents are still top priorities for crews. In southern Utah, fires such as the Cottonwood and Babylon incidents continue to draw in firefighters and aircraft as teams work to shore up containment lines and protect nearby communities, according to local coverage.
Planning a Canyon Trip? Check Before You Go
Anyone heading for American Fork Canyon or the Alpine Loop should check the latest alerts from the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest and the statewide Utah Fire Info dashboard for up-to-date closure information, airspace restrictions, and trail status. If you run into evacuation orders or roadblocks, officials emphasized that following directions from law enforcement and forest staff is not just a formality; cooperating with closures keeps both visitors and firefighters out of harm’s way.
