A 34-year-old Grifton man is facing a long list of felony charges after Kinston police say he was tied to an armed robbery and burglary at a residence in the Carver Courts neighborhood. Officers identified the suspect as Cray Jones and say they found narcotics when they located and arrested him in Kinston the next day. According to police, Jones now faces multiple felony counts that include robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary and second-degree kidnapping, along with several drug-related charges. Detectives also served outstanding Lenoir County warrants that allege assault, burglary, kidnapping, robbery and felony conspiracy.
Arrest and charges
Per a July 27 post on the Kinston Police Department Facebook page, detectives obtained arrest warrants and served them on July 24 after locating Jones in Kinston. The department’s post lists charges that include robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree burglary, second-degree kidnapping, felony conspiracy and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. It also states that Jones was charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, maintaining a dwelling for drug activity, possession of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a child care center and interfering with emergency communications.
Carver Courts and recent police activity
Carver Courts has been the focus of multiple serious investigations this year, and the complex has seen heightened enforcement by Kinston detectives. WITN reported on a deadly shooting at Carver Courts in late April, and an April fentanyl sweep at the same development underscored ongoing public-safety concerns in the neighborhood. Officials say recent operations have targeted both violent crimes and drug distribution in the area.
What happens next
The Kinston Police Department says the investigation remains active and that Jones was also served with outstanding Lenoir County warrants. The department’s post did not include bond information. As with any arrest, the charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
