A deadly chain-reaction crash turned westbound Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) into an hours-long traffic nightmare in Gilbert on Sunday morning, leaving one woman dead and East Valley drivers crawling through detours. Troopers said the collision happened just past the Higley Road overpass around 11:06 a.m., and emergency crews shut down all westbound lanes while they pieced together what happened.
What happened
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a Volkswagen electric vehicle had stopped in the second lane from the left because of mechanical trouble when a Volkswagen Jetta hit it. A Chevrolet pickup then struck the Jetta, killing the Jetta’s only occupant, a woman.
The crash occurred less than 5 miles west of Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport. Authorities expected westbound Loop 202 to stay closed until about 3 p.m., according to KTAR.

The wreck unfolded along a stretch of the Santan that is already a construction headache. The area is part of the Arizona Department of Transportation’s ongoing Loop 202 widening project, which has brought periodic lane and ramp closures in recent weeks, as outlined by ADOT.
