A Sunday night of fireworks and festivities in Yukon ended with gunfire when a woman was shot at the city’s annual Freedom Fest and rushed to a local hospital, authorities said.
Police say the adult woman was hit while standing next to a parked trolley along Von Elm Avenue as crowds were streaming out of Chisholm Trail Park. Officers and paramedics arrived at the scene around 10 p.m., and the investigation remains open.
According to KFOR, officers were also dispatched at roughly the same time to a nearby report of a physical fight. That group had scattered by the time police got there. Yukon police told the station they do not believe the disturbance and the shooting are connected. No arrests had been announced as of the latest update, and officials have not released additional details about the victim.
Festival Crowds, Shuttle Routes And A Sudden Crime Scene
The shooting unfolded during Yukon’s two-day Fourth of July Freedom Fest at Chisholm Trail Park, a holiday staple that features live music, food vendors and shuttle service, according to the City of Yukon. The event draws families from across Canadian County and spreads activities across multiple stages and shuttle spots, which can make the post-fireworks exit feel more like a slow parade than a quick getaway.
City organizers publish safety tips for festival-goers each year, including suggested family meeting points and locations for lost-child stations, to help people navigate the crowds once the last firework fades.
Detectives Sift Through Tips, Video
As noted by KFOR, early tips have led investigators to focus on the 500 block of North Czech Hall Road as a possible origin point for the shot. Yukon police say they are combing through surveillance footage and videos recorded by festival attendees as they work to reconstruct the moments before and after the woman was struck.
Anyone who was in the area around 10 p.m. and noticed something unusual, even if it seemed minor at the time, is being asked to speak with investigators.
