A driverless Waymo robotaxi wound up on fire after a rear-end crash in northeast Atlanta Sunday night, turning a routine fender bender into a smoky roadside spectacle.
Rear-End Crash Sets The Robotaxi Ablaze
According to WSB-TV, the crash happened on Cheshire Bridge Road at Manchester Street, where a Waymo spokesperson said the robotaxi was waiting to turn left when another driver slammed into it from behind. The company said the other vehicle caught fire and the flames spread to the Waymo. Atlanta Fire Rescue checked two people in the second car, and both declined transport to the hospital. No one was inside the Waymo at the time.
Atlanta News First's video report placed the crash in Morningside-Lenox Park and said it happened Sunday night. The setting is classic neighborhood-news territory, but the star of the show is pure 2026: a driverless taxi that turns an everyday wreck into a high-tech headline.
Atlanta Has Already Been Writing Robotaxi Rules
The wreck plays out in a city that has already had to spell out how officers should handle Waymo stops, crash scenes and calls for backup. In February, Atlanta police drafted a six-page playbook for dealing with the vehicles when no human driver is behind the wheel.
Waymo also paused Atlanta service in May after one of its cars got stuck in floodwater, then returned later that month, according to Atlanta News First. Sunday night's fire is another reminder that the company is still learning the local playbook the hard way.
