Summer Impact officers with the Worcester Police Department say a late-night welfare check on Church Street turned into a gun and drug arrest, after they found a 58-year-old man slumped over the wheel of a parked car with a loaded firearm and a small bag of suspected fentanyl close at hand.
According to officers, the car was spotted late Wednesday and the driver appeared to be unconscious. When they approached, police say the man was eventually removed from the vehicle, a leather holster was recovered from the area where he had been reaching, and a firearm was later discovered inside a backpack in the car. The man was transported to a hospital for evaluation, and the department’s Crime Scene Unit processed the weapon at the scene. Police booked him on multiple firearm and drug charges.
According to a Worcester Police Department Facebook post, officers assigned to the Summer Impact unit found the vehicle at about 10:45 p.m. and identified the driver as Charles Harris, 58, of Worcester. The department says officers tapped on the window to wake Harris and saw him reach under his seat before removing him from the car and beginning a search. The post also notes that Harris did not have a Massachusetts license to carry a firearm or a firearms identification (FID) card.

According to that reporting, police charged him with possession of a large-capacity firearm, possession of a firearm without an FID card, carrying a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition without an FID card, improper storage of a firearm, and possession of a Class A drug.
