The Cincinnati Bengals opened their 2026 public training camp Wednesday with plenty of expected football drama — plus an early dose of real-life friction between two starters. Ja’Marr Chase and DJ Turner got into a physical altercation during practice, putting a little extra bite into the first session.
According to The Cincinnati Enquirer, the confrontation happened during the 11-on-11 portion of practice. That is the stretch of camp designed to look most like actual football, which apparently meant the intensity arrived before the regular season did.
The incident happened during the Bengals’ first practice open to the public this summer. The Bengals’ published schedule listed Wednesday’s session at the Kettering Health Practice Fields, with gates opening at 9:30 a.m. and practice running from 10 a.m. to noon.
Chase is Cincinnati’s star wide receiver, while Turner is a starting-caliber cornerback tasked with covering players such as Chase every day. The Bengals’ official roster lists both players, and the team’s player pages identify Chase as a five-time Pro Bowler and Turner as a corner who broke out with 18 passes defensed during the 2025 season.
The pairing has produced plenty of competitive moments before, and the Bengals’ own 2025 camp coverage highlighted Turner breaking up passes against Chase. Wednesday’s scuffle does not automatically signal a larger problem, but it does show that the defense and offense are already competing with the sort of edge coaches usually hope to see in late August.
There was no immediate indication that the altercation would affect either player’s availability for the next session. The Bengals are scheduled to hold another public practice Thursday, giving Cincinnati fans a quick chance to see whether the two players return to the field with the disagreement behind them — or keep the summer’s first camp subplot alive.
