After a quarter-century of pints, pub fare, and fish and chips, The Pub Rookwood is closing its doors in Cincinnati. The British-style restaurant is leaving Rookwood Commons, but Tavern Restaurant Group is shifting the concept rather than abandoning the market entirely.
The restaurant closed permanently yesterday after what the company called a 25-year run in Rookwood Commons. According to WKRC Local 12, Tavern Restaurant Group blamed challenging economic conditions and rising operating costs, while CEO Nick Sanders said retiring the location best fit the brand’s future strategy.
The group said customers can still get Pub favorites through The Pub London Street Food inside Element Eatery in Madisonville. It also plans to give a large bar at deSha’s in Symmes Township a Pub-inspired makeover, while The Pub at Crestview Hills Town Center will continue serving the Northern Kentucky crowd. The company said those locations will keep offering its award-winning fish and chips for dine-in and through select delivery platforms, and that it is working to support employees during the transition.
A 25-Year Cincinnati Run Comes To An End
The Rookwood location was not a short-lived experiment: Tavern Restaurant Group says The Pub Rookwood opened in 2001, making it one of the company’s longstanding Cincinnati-area concepts. The group, founded by Nick Sanders, also operates deSha’s, Nicholson’s, and other Pub locations across several states.
The closure lands during a difficult stretch for Cincinnati restaurants. A recent University of Cincinnati review of local research found that about 60% of restaurants opened in the city between 2008 and 2023 had closed, while rising labor, material, rent, and other operating costs continue to squeeze already-thin margins, according to the University of Cincinnati.
Still, the local dining scene is not exactly folding up the patio umbrellas. FOX19 NOW reported that at least 59 restaurants, bars, and coffee shops opened across Greater Cincinnati during the first half of 2026, even as at least 25 restaurants and bars closed. The Pub Rookwood’s departure is another reminder that in the current market, even a neighborhood fixture may need to change locations, format, or both to keep serving.
