Boston City Hall ground to a halt Wednesday afternoon when Councilor Julia Mejia appeared to suffer a medical emergency in the middle of a Boston City Council meeting. Emergency medical personnel rushed into the chamber, and Mejia was carried out on a stretcher as councilors and staff looked on. The council temporarily paused its agenda while EMTs worked, then later picked business back up.
EMTs Called To The Chamber
Emergency responders were summoned to the council chamber shortly before 1:30 p.m., according to The Boston Globe. After roughly 10 tense minutes, several emergency medical technicians took Mejia, who appeared conscious, out of the room on a stretcher. The Globe reports the council recessed and resumed about 30 minutes later, at around 2 p.m.
Council Reaction
As EMTs entered the chamber, councilors quickly shifted from policy talk to concern for their colleague.
“Wishing that our colleague is okay,” Councilor Enrique Pepén said in the chamber, according to the Globe. Formal debate stayed on hold while EMS treated Mejia, and councilors returned to their scheduled agenda once the break ended.
