Cobb County commissioners have given the green light to a three-year driverless-shuttle test in Cumberland, putting autonomous rides on the streets around Truist Park and The Battery Atlanta. The vote moves the idea from a federal grant announcement to an actual local transit experiment.
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners approved the project Tuesday, according to WSB-TV. The county describes it as the Autonomous Vehicle Circulator Pilot Project, designed to replace the current method of transit operation in the Cumberland area while serving the entertainment district near the Battery and Truist Park.
A $7.7 Million Pilot Without County Tax Dollars
The broader funding package is built around a $6.6 million federal grant through the Federal Transit Administration’s Low or No Emission Vehicle Program. Cobb County Government said the Cumberland Autonomous Mobility Network will become part of the CobbLinc public transit system and is expected to launch in 2027.
Under the framework approved by commissioners, the Cumberland Community Improvement District will provide $1.1 million, while the program cannot exceed $7.7 million in total costs. WSB-TV reported that Cobb County itself will not contribute money, with funding expected to come from federal grants, Cumberland CID funds or other non-county sources.
Driverless Does Not Mean Unsupervised
The planned vehicles will be autonomous, but they will not simply be sent out to fend for themselves in Cumberland traffic. The Cumberland CID award release says operator Beep will use in-cabin monitoring and remote human oversight to respond to passenger-safety or roadway issues.
The project calls for eight ADA-accessible shuttles, with Beep handling operations and integrating the service with CobbLinc. That makes the pilot less a robo-bus free-for-all than a closely monitored first- and last-mile connector wrapped in autonomous-vehicle technology.
The New Shuttles Will Overlay An Existing Transit Loop
CobbLinc currently lists a free Circulator Blue route connecting the Cumberland Transfer Center, Cumberland Mall, Akers Mill Square, Cobb Galleria and Truist Park. The county’s current route information does not yet provide a detailed operating schedule for the autonomous replacement, so riders will have to wait for the final stop pattern and launch timetable.
Cumberland Has Already Tried The Concept
The new network builds on the Cumberland Hopper, an earlier autonomous-shuttle pilot that operated on selected days in the district. The Cumberland CID says the larger system is part of the planned Cumberland Sweep, a three-mile-plus multimodal corridor linking major commercial, residential and recreational destinations.
