Atlanta police and federal marshals tracked a 26-year-old fugitive to a Smyrna motel early Thursday, arresting him in connection with a June homicide in Vine City. The suspect, identified by authorities as Aloni Evans, was taken into custody at a Motel 6 off Cobb Drive without reported incident after investigators traced him to the property.
According to Atlanta News First, the Atlanta Police Department’s Fugitive Unit teamed up with the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force to make the arrest. The outlet reported that "Evans’ charges haven’t been announced yet." Online hotel listings place the Motel 6 Smyrna near Cobb Drive at 2200 Corporate Plaza Pkwy SE, per TripAdvisor.
Atlanta News First reported that officers were called around 8 a.m. on June 24 to an apartment off Magnolia Street NW in Vine City, where they found a man shot to death. The victim has not been publicly identified, and police have not released any information about a possible motive as homicide detectives continue their work.
Federal Task Force Joined Local Detectives
The U.S. Marshals Service's Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, which the agency says works alongside local departments to track down high-risk fugitives, took part in the Smyrna operation. That kind of multi-agency collaboration is a standard move when officers believe a suspect is trying to stay one step ahead of an arrest warrant.
