A blown fire hydrant has put part of Crosby Township under a boil advisory, with the warning expected to remain in place through tonight. The hydrant has been repaired, but the failure caused a drop in water pressure that prompted Greater Cincinnati Water Works to tell residents to use bottled or boiled water for anything they might drink or eat.
The hydrant failed at New Haven Road and Paddy's Run Road, according to WCPO 9 News. The affected area is roughly bounded by Baughman and Edgewood roads to the west, several streets around New Haven Road to the north, East Miami River and River roads to the east, and Hamilton Cleves and Dry Fork roads to the south.
GCWW describes the advisory as a precautionary step after the system was depressurized. The utility explains on its boil advisory page that pressure loss can create a possibility that microbial contaminants enter the water system, even when contamination has not been confirmed.
What Crosby Township Residents Should Do
Residents in the impacted zone should let cold water run from taps used for drinking and cooking for at least three minutes, then bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before letting it cool. As WCPO reported, the same bottled-or-boiled-water rule applies to drinking, cooking, making ice, preparing baby formula, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation.
The advisory is scheduled to remain in effect until today at 11 p.m., unless testing requires an extension. GCWW says residents in the affected area will be notified if the timeline changes.
