A 14-year-old girl was found dead in a hot tub at a Crown Point home on Wednesday morning, setting off an active police investigation and leaving basic questions still unanswered. First responders tried to save her at the scene, then rushed her to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Authorities have not released her name and say they are still working to determine how she died.
Officers were called just before 8:30 a.m. to a residence in the 1000 block of East Greenwood Avenue after a report of an unresponsive juvenile in a hot tub, according to CBS News Chicago. Crown Point Fire Department crews performed life-saving measures before the girl was taken to Franciscan Health Crown Point, where she was later pronounced dead. The Crown Point Police Department said the investigation is ongoing and did not immediately provide details on what may have led to the teen's death.

"It is unclear what led to the teen's death," Crown Point police said, according to CBS News Chicago. Detectives stayed at the home on Wednesday as they processed the scene and spoke with possible witnesses. As of midafternoon, officials had not said whether they suspected foul play.

Federal safety officials warn that pools, spas and hot tubs can pose drowning and entrapment risks when equipment fails or when covers and drains do not meet current safety standards.
